Have you heard of the terms Mission, Vision, and Value? These concepts havedeveloped primarily in the fields of business and organizational studies. Among others, Peter Drucker emphasized the importance of clarifying an organization’s purpose anddirection, contributing to their widespread adoption.
One well-known example is Jan Carlzon’s leadership in reforming Scandinavian Airlines. He introduced a "North Star vision"?a constant point of reference to help all employees stay aligned with the company’s goals, even in times of uncertainty. Thisunchanging guide serves as a metaphor for direction and clarity, both for individuals and organizations.
At the Division of Public Health Nursing, Tohoku University Graduate School ofMedicine, we believe it is equally essential to articulate what we value and where we are headed. From Control to Autonomy?and Toward Social Impact Organizations of the past were often evaluated by their ability to maintain strict controland efficiency. Today, however, the ideal has shifted toward organizations that learn, empathize, and act autonomously. This paradigm shift resonates deeply with the fieldof public health nursing, which engages with the everyday lives of community members and working populations.
We believe that supporting individuals and organizations in moving toward betterfutures under their own initiative lies at the very heart of public health nursing. This same principle guides our approach to education and the cultivation of future practitioners and researchers. Through collaborative inquiry, we aspire to generate knowledge that brings hope and meaningful solutions to society.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Public Health Nursing Our division is home to five faculty members, each with a distinct area of expertise, addressing a wide range of topics related to public health nursing. Through diverse research and educational approaches, we support the learning journeys of students and researchers with varied interests.
We are convinced that the advancement of public health nursing is closely tied to improving people’s quality of life. To shape that future, nurturing the next generation is one of our most important missions.
